Underdog Theatre

Our mission

Underdog Theatre is a community theatre based in Hamilton County, IN. Primarily working with high school and college aged kids, Underdog is a safe place for people to develop their skills as an actor and thrive in an open and accepting environment. It is our goal to give everyone a chance, no matter the person's experience.

What does being an underdog mean?

un·der·dog

noun

a competitor thought to have little chance of winning a fight or contest.

Underdog Theatre's founding goal was to give the underdog a chance. We strive to create an environment for young and inexperienced actors, giving them a chance they won't find elsewhere.

I was introduced to Underdog Theatre when I was in my sophomore year of high school. At this time, I had very little theatre experience and wanted something to be apart of. I was asked to join Underdog Theatre for a charity Halloween event in addition to their production of A Christmas Carol. It introduced me to a type of theatre that allowed me to personally grow as an actor and gave me a group to feel a part of.

I then continued to the next year with their production of She Kills Monsters where I had one of my first bigger roles in a play. It was a character I typically wouldn’t have seen myself playing, but it allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and push me in a way that made me better and feel a lot more confident. Once again, I felt as if I had grown even more as an actor but even more as a person. The group is entirely supportive and feels like a family. I cannot say I have had this experience anywhere else and am forever grateful for the experiences, friends, and personal growth I’ve had with Underdog Theatre.

Actor, Assistant Director, Vice President

I joined Underdog my junior year of high school, with very little acting experience and a crave for more. I love acting, and Underdog has really given me the outlet to do things outside of my comfort zone and just grow closer with a cast as a family. My first production with Underdog was Clay Howard’s “If I Could Go Back” and it was a blast. Being in a production like “If I Could Go Back” changed me as an actor. It made me think more about what I’m doing while onstage and really helped me to grow. Between the people, the different casts, the creative shows, and the general fun environment, Underdog has made itself into one of my favorite places to be involved with, and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Actor, Technician

I first joined Underdog my freshman year after my friend resiliently asked me to. It was by far the best choice I have made. I had never been given the chance to act before, so finding out I was cast in my first Underdog show, She Kills Monsters, made me feel seen. In a world where everything is extremely competitive and cruel, it was nice to have a place where I felt welcome and appreciated. I found a family within Underdog, and that wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for that friend.
